Helm (Dutch: Helmet) is a form of body protection worn on the head and is usually made of metal or other hard materials such as kevlar, fiber resin, or plastic.

Helmets are usually used as a head protection for various combat activities (military), or civic activities such as sports, mining, or driving. Helmet can provide additional protection on the part of the head (depending on its structure) of falling or high-speed objects.

In some countries, helmets are required for motorcyclists, some even requiring them for non-motorized cyclists. In Britain only Sikhs are allowed to wear a helmet for wearing a turban.

Type of helmet

Helmet of war

At first the helmet was used as part of the armor of ancient Greek civilization, classical Roman, throughout the medieval times, until the late 17th century witnessed the widespread use of helmets throughout Europe to Japan. It could be said that there is no other use of helmets other than war purposes. The helmet protects the head from cutting off the opponent's weapon, the arrival of an arrow, or even a low-speed bullet (from an early shotgun like an arquebus). The use of helmets has decreased since 1670 when the efficiency and speed of bullet rifles increased considerably. In the 18th century there was no infantry using it again.

The Napoleonic Era became the inaugural use of helmets for cavalrymen. The use of heavy artillery in World War I indicated the need to use helmets for ordinary soldiers to reduce casualties due to bomb or schrapnel fragments. In the second World War and now for the same purpose helmets are still standard equipment for soldiers.

Motorcycle Helmet

Helmet used to protect the head in case of traffic accidents on motorcycle users. It was first stipulated to be obliged to be used in Indonesia by the Chief of Police of the Republic of Hoegeng, but received strong resistance at that time, and was formally enacted in Law No. 14 of 1992.

Bicycle helmet

The bicycle helmet is a helmet used by bicycle users, designed differently from motorcycle helmets because the speed of the bike is only about 15 km / hour. Although in Indonesia has not been required to use a bicycle helmet, but has been widely used by people in cycling activities on holiday, but on bicycle or mountain bike helmet sports are required.

Bicycle helmets are divided into three types of utilities, all of these types are designed to protect the user's head from impact, while the type of bike helmet is required to have light weight and comfortable. The differences are as follows:

Sport helmets (multi use)

An economical choice for commuting, outbound, mountain biker, skateboarder, inline skater as well as BMX bike users,

Helmet road bike
