The tradition of celebrating the New Year on January 1st originated in Rus' in 1700. This date was set by Peter the Great, who was ruling at that time. Before this, the country celebrated the beginning of the year on September 1, and until 1492, the New Year celebration took place on March 1.

January 1st became an official holiday for the first time in 1897. With the advent of Soviet power, many traditions, including the Christmas tree, were abolished, and between 1930 and 1947, January 1 was a standard working day. Its status as a day off was returned to it in 1947, but for a long time only the first day of the year was a holiday. Russians received the opportunity to rest for two days in a row in 1992, and in 1995, a five-day New Year holiday appeared, which actually stretched for 7-10 days.
