In the Russian Orthodox Church, as well as in the Jerusalem, Georgian, Serbian Church and in the monasteries of Athos, fixed circle holidays are celebrated according to the Julian calendar, which differs from the classical one by 13 days. Thus, the beginning of the church year (New Year), set for September 1, is celebrated on September 14.

In the other eleven Local Orthodox Churches, the dates of the fixed circle are celebrated according to the New Julian calendar. For example, Christmas is celebrated before the New Year, December 25th.

The most important and widely known church holidays are Christmas, Epiphany, Easter, Holy Trinity Day, Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Fasts are also of great importance for Christians: Great, Apostolic, Assumption and Christmas. Fasting is not just a certain limitation: it carries a spiritual meaning and direction.
