The history of Islam and the deaths of celebrities and notables is the most famous and largest of what Imam al-Dhahabi wrote. It is considered one of the most important huge encyclopedic books compiled by Muslim historians. As can be seen from the title, it is an observation of Islamic history, starting from the Prophet’s migration to the year 1300 AD / 700 AH, based on 70 layers (i.e. 700 years according to the Hijri calendar). This period constitutes an important time frame in the emergence of a new civilization that expanded geographically to touch East and West and was influenced by other aspects. The period of two martyrs made great bones and was documented by al-Dhahabi with biographies of famous people (their number reached forty thousand personalities) in every aspect of life, which distinguished it from the rest of the books.

The book is also distinguished on the biographies of the nobles, with a translation of other men who are not present in it, including famous people such as the four adults, and among them the unknown. Golden committed to 3 plans:

From the migration (the beginning of the book) until the year 40 AH, in which he merged his words about the four classes, and mixed the mention of deaths with accidents.

From the year 41 A.H. to 300 A.H., and there is a narration of his translations according to the layers.

From the year 300 A.H. to 700 A.H., in which there is a narration of his translations according to the deaths of each year, arranged according to the letters of the dictionary using the nickname.

The book is full of suspense for its inclusion of every fragment and rare brevity.

The book contains extensive material on political and administrative history, selected from many sources, most of which were lost and did not reach our hands, and a mention of the economic conditions of the Islamic state and the developments that befell it.

The book depicts the intellectual life in the Islamic world and its development over seven centuries, and highlights the Islamic centers and their role in radiating thought and helping people, through the movement of scholars and their transfer between the known and unknown metropolises of science, and the expansion of the movement from time to time; Which shows the extent to which cultural centers flourish or dormant.

More than one attempt was made to publish this huge work in its entirety, until Dr. Omar Abd al-Salam al-Tadmury succeeded in investigating it in about fifty volumes.
