The Greater Book of Fiqh is considered one of the oldest and most important works on the fundamentals of religion according to the Sunnis and the community. It was compiled by Imam Abu Hanifa al-Numan ibn Thabit, and it became, along with the rest of his doctrinal treatises “Like the Scholar and the Learned,” “The Will,” and “The Simplest Jurisprudence,” the main reference; On which the Maturidite Hanafis rely in their origins, and Abu Mansur al-Baghdadi stated that it was originally compiled to respond to the Qadariyya.
The book’s attribution to Imam Abu Hanifa is established, and was mentioned by a large number of scholars, including Ibn Abi Al-Izz in his explanation of Al-Tahawiyyah. Where he explained that Imam Abu Hanifa called what he collected in papers on the principles of religion: “The Greater Fiqh,” and he quoted from this book in more than one place in his explanation. He also confirmed the attribution of the book by the scholar Al-Laknawi in his book “Al-Fawa’id Al-Bahiyya,” as well as Haji Khalifa in Kashf Al-Zunun. .
Imam Abu Hanifa called his book “The Greater Fiqh” to distinguish it from the jurisprudence “The Lesser Fiqh.” Whereas the smallest means the branches that the person responsible is required to bring and collect; In compliance with the commands and prohibitions contained in the Holy Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet, and these relate to the actions and words on which actions are based, such as the forms of contracts, for example.
While the largest is related to the fundamentals of religion, including the beliefs whose branches are not valid unless they are sound, and they are the topics of divinity and what falls within it. Such as belief in the existence of God Almighty, the necessity of His attributes, and that He is the chosen Creator, and investigations of prophecies, which include research into the truth of the miracle, its indication of the truthfulness of the Prophet, and the audio material that branches out from the investigations of prophecy, which is the news of the Messenger.
