The Qatar national football team is the official representative of Qatar in the sport of football, and it is supervised by the Qatar Football Association, which was established in 1960 and joined the International Federation of Football in 1970.

The team has appeared in ten AFC Asian Cups and won them once in 2019. They play their home matches at Khalifa International Stadium and Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium. The latter is the home stadium for the team.

Qatar hosted the 2022 World Cup and thus automatically qualified and made its first World Cup appearance. This is the first time that an Arab country hosts the competition.

the date

Before 1970

Football appeared in Qatar around the time of the initial discovery of oil reserves in the city of Dukhan in 1940. By 1948, expatriate oil workers played the first official football match in Qatar. The Qatar Football Association was established in 1960 and the Qatar Association joined FIFA in 1963. At the same time during this period, the Bahrain Football Association was making plans to create a regional football competition within the GCC countries, and Qatari officials were involved in supporting this proposal. The plans came to fruition and in March 1970 the Persian Gulf Cup was inaugurated.

1970–1980

The Qatari national team played its first official match on March 27, 1970 against its host, Bahrain, and lost 1-2, as Mubarak Faraj scored the only goal for Qatar. The newly formed Qatar national team had disappointing results in the first Gulf Cup tournament, coming last with just one point, which came to a 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabia in their last match.

In the next edition of the Gulf Cup in 1972, Qatar once again achieved last place after suffering three consecutive defeats. As for the next edition in 1974, the Qatari national team showed an improvement in the results, as they achieved their first victory in international football by defeating Oman 4-0, after that the Qatar national team lost to Saudi Arabia in the semi-finals, but they achieved third place after winning a penalty shootout against the UAE national team.

Qatar reached the final stage of the Asian qualifiers for the 1998 World Cup. After defeating China and Iran, they played their last match against Saudi Arabia, where the victory would have led to qualification for the World Cup, but they lost against Saudi Arabia 1-0 and failed to reach the World Cup.

Qatar hosted the 1998 Arab Cup, and they finished runners-up in the tournament after losing the final against Saudi Arabia, 3-1.

2000–2010

Qatar reached the quarter-finals of the 2000 AFC Asian Cup despite finishing third in their group, but lost to China in the quarter-finals.

They reached the final round of World Cup qualification again in 2001 but lost against Bora Milutinović's China team. Frenchman Philippe Troussier took over as manager after the 2002 World Cup in Korea and Japan but was unsuccessful in both the 2004 Asian Cup and the 2006 World Cup qualifiers in Germany.

After that, Jorge Fossati took over the task of coaching the team in the 2010 World Cup qualifiers, which led the team for the first three rounds in the qualifiers, and Qatar topped its group, then Fossati underwent stomach surgery. The QFA decided to terminate Fossati's contract in September 2008, as the QFA claimed that he needed a long time to recover from the surgery. Bruno Mezzo was hired to take over as head coach, succeeding Fossati, and Qatar failed to qualify after finishing fourth in their qualifying group.
