Tahajjud (تحجد) means to wake up. Tahajjud prayers or night prayers; Being a supererogatory act of worship, after the obligatory prayers, the importance of the tahajjud prayers is the most virtuous of all the other sunnat and supererogatory prayers.

Tahajjud prayer is sunnat in the sense that the Prophet (peace be upon him) recited it. If any of the deeds of the Prophet (peace be upon him) are followed by the servants of Allah, it is Sunnah. And since the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) performed it, it is Sunnah.
