Mikawa-ben is a dialect of Japanese spoken in the former Mikawa Province (eastern part of Aichi Prefecture). It is divided into the dialects of West Mikawa and East Mikawa. Kosai City in Shizuoka Prefecture and former Mikkabi-cho, Sakuma-cho, and Misakubo-cho in Hamamatsu City are strongly influenced by Higashi-Mikawa dialect.
The Mikawa dialect is located between the Nagoya and Owari dialects in western Aichi Prefecture and the Enshu dialect in western Shizuoka Prefecture, and belongs to the Tokai Higashiyama dialect. The dialect boundary with Owari is on the border of the old country. However, the Chita Peninsula is part of the former Owari Province, and in terms of dialect, it is included in West Mikawa. There are the following differences between the Mikawa dialect and the Nagoya dialect.
1. Consecutive vowel ai changes to æː in Nagoya dialect, but does not change to ai or eː in Mikawa dialect.
2. In the accent, adjectives such as ``thick'', ``red'', and ``thin'' are medium-high type (akai) in the Nagoya dialect, but they are flat type (akai) in the Mikawa dialect. In addition, the accents of verbs, nouns, etc. also differ in some respects.
3. In the Mikawa dialect, the auxiliary verbs ``dara'', ``zura'' and ``ra'' are used for speculation (``ra'' is mainly used in Higashi-Mikawa).
4. For final particles, the Mikawa dialect uses ``no'', ``non'', ``nonhoi'' and ``en'' instead of ``namo'' and ``emo'', which are used in the Nagoya dialect.
Before the Owari Tokugawa family entered Nagoya, a language similar to Mikawa dialect was spoken in the Owari region. However, while the language of the Owari region was strongly influenced by the narrowly defined Nagoya dialect formed in the castle town of Nagoya during the Edo period, it came to be lumped together as the broadly defined Nagoya dialect, whereas the Mikawa region was not so affected. By the end of the Edo period, a clear difference had formed between Mikawa and Owari. However, in the Chita Peninsula, where maritime transportation was prosperous even in the former Owari Province, the influence of the narrowly defined Nagoya dialect was somewhat weak, and a dialect similar to the Mikawa dialect remained (→ Chita dialect).
The interior of Mikawaben is also divided into West Mikawa centering on Okazaki City and East Mikawa centering on Toyohashi City. The accent of Nishi Mikawa is the middle ring Tokyo style accent, but the accent of East Mikawa is the outer ring Tokyo style accent. As for adjectives, the adjectives are phonetically used in West Mikawa, but not phonetized in East Mikawa. There are also some differences in vocabulary between Nishi-Mikawa and Higashi-Mikawa. The dialectal boundary between Nishi-Mikawa and Higashi-Mikawa is the boundary between Gamagori and Otsuka, and between Minami-Shitara-gun, Kitashitara-gun and Higashi-Kamo-gun (roughly the current Okazaki City/Toyota City and Toyokawa City/Shinjo City/Shitara Town). between).
``Jan, dara, and rin'' are often cited as representative expressions of the Mikawa dialect. Also, Higashi Mikawa is said to be ``non, hoi, and dani''. The Higashi-Mikawa dialect has many parts in common with the Enshu dialect. In addition, it is common to Western Japan dialects in that ``oru'' is used instead of ``iru'' throughout Mikawa, and ``n'' is used instead of ``not'' as a negative auxiliary verb.
The words 'nonhoi' and 'dani', which are frequently used in East Mikawa, especially in Toyohashi and Atsumi Peninsula, are common to the Enshu dialect, but they are not used at all in West Mikawa.
