Defeated the Taira clan in the Battle of Dannoura (1185), and in the same year, under the imperial sanction of Bunji (1185), Yoritomo was granted Shugo and Jito to the provinces. Authorized the establishment, appointment and dismissal of positions. In 1190, Yoritomo was appointed Gon Dainagon and Ukone no daisho (Grand Chief of the Right Guard), and was given the right to establish the Kobunsho (later known as Mandokoro), the domestic administrative institution of the lord of the manor. In 1192, he was proclaimed Seii Taishogun. Thus, the samurai government was established both in name and reality. Although the shogunate was in charge of maintaining public order in various countries with the establishment of shugo, its control was limited at first, but gradually expanded its scope. Through the Jokyu War and the Genko, it came to establish nationwide rulership.
