Career

upbringing

Born November 27, 1894 in Chidanoki, Wasa Village, Kaiso District, Wakayama Prefecture (currently Negi, Wakayama City) as the third son of Masakusu Matsushita and Tokue, a small landowner. It is assumed that the surname Matsushita was used because the house was located under a large pine tree.

Around 1899, his father failed in the rice market and went bankrupt, so the family moved to Honmachi 1-chome, Wakayama City and started a geta store. However, my father had no business acumen and closed the shop. Konosuke dropped out of elementary school in four years, and at the age of nine he was apprenticed to the Miyata hibachi store. After that, he moved his apprenticeship to Godai Bicycle. When he was a fifth-generation bicycle apprentice, he met Shinjiro Torii, the owner of Kotobukiya, the origin of Suntory, and made him his management mentor for the future. This experience later became the impetus for the establishment of Panaracer. During his apprenticeship at a bicycle shop, customers often sent him to buy cigarettes. At that time, rather than going out to buy them one by one, if I bought them in bulk, I could have cigarettes immediately and the unit price would be cheaper, so I used this to save some change. However, this caused an antipathy from fellow apprentices, and the shopkeeper recommended that he stop buying in bulk, so he stopped buying in bulk. From around this time, along with showing his business acumen, he also came to realize that it was not good to win on his own.

Impressed by seeing the streetcars introduced in Osaka City, he aspired to work in the field of electricity. At the age of 16, he joined Osaka Dento (currently Kansai Electric Power) and worked there for seven years. At that time, light bulbs were wired directly into the house, and removing the light bulb was a dangerous task that required specialized knowledge. In 1913, at the age of 18, he entered the evening preparatory course at Kansai Commerce and Industry School. In 1917, he retired from Osaka Electric Light Company.

At his home in Ikaino, Tsuruhashi-cho, Higashinari-gun, Osaka (currently 2-chome, Tamatsu, Higashinari-ku, Osaka), his wife Mumeno and his younger brother Toshio Iue (in charge of sales, later managing director, founded Sanyo Electric after the war) Independent) and two friends, a total of five people, started manufacturing and selling the same socket. However, sales of the new socket were not good, and two of his friends left Konosuke. After that, the attachment plug and the plug for two lights became a hit, so the business got on track.

Along with business expansion, in 1918 Matsushita Electric Appliances Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (currently Panasonic Holdings) was founded in Daikai-cho, Nishinoda, Kita-ku, Osaka (currently 2-chome, Daikai, Fukushima-ku, Osaka). Following on from light bulb sockets, he invented lantern-type removable bicycle lamps (began using the "National" trademark from 1925). In 1929, the name was changed to Matsushita Electric Manufacturing Co., Ltd., and at the same time, the company established its Principles and Creed.

Kadoma relocation

Designating 1932 as the first year of wisdom, held the 1st founding ceremony on May 5th. instructed to Also, in order to expand the business, the head office and factory were moved to Kadoma-mura, Kitakawachi-gun, Osaka Prefecture (currently Kadoma-shi), where there is a lot of land. At that time, the area from Kadoma City to Hirakata City was delayed in development because it was regarded as a dark gate from the perspective of Osaka City, but he pointed to a map of Japan that stretched long and narrow in the northeast and said, ``Most of the Japanese archipelago is a dark gate,'' and went ahead. . In 1935, it was incorporated as Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.

During World War II, he cooperated in the production of munitions by order. Matsushita Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. was established in April 1943, and under the leadership of Toshio Iue, a former shipping company president, 56 250-ton class wooden ships were built by the end of the war. Next, in October of the same year, Matsushita Aircraft Co., Ltd. was established near Dantsu Airfield, and under the technical guidance of the Air Technical Arsenal, seven prototypes of the Myojo, wooden training dive bombers with a reinforced plywood structure, were produced by the end of the war. Although it made it to test flights, one aircraft soon disintegrated in mid-air, resulting in a disastrous failure due to a lack of awareness of the absolute quality and reliability required of an aircraft.

Immediately after the war, the company was designated as a limited company by GHQ, and many of the officers, including Konosuke and Toshio, were expelled from public office as war collaborators. Konosuke, who took the Iue brothers out of the company in the form of a goodwill division, refuted, saying, ``Matsushita was built in a single generation, and it did not become big through acquisitions, nor does it belong to a zaibatsu.'' On the other hand, in November 1946, he established the PHP Research Institute and gained a reputation by embarking on ethics education. The labor union thanked GHQ for using internal reserves and avoiding layoffs as much as possible, so the company's designation as a restricted company was soon lifted, and in 1947 he returned to the post of president. .
