The Chief Executive in conjunction with the Executive Council approved the adjustment of taxi fares in urban areas, the New Territories and Lantau Island. Taxi fares will be increased by NT$2 when the flag is dropped, and NT$1 to NT$2 will be added for each jump. It will take effect on July 14.

After the adjustment, the flag farewell fee for urban taxis is NT$29, New Territories taxis are NT$25.50, and Lantau taxis are NT$24.

Based on the first journey, taxis in urban areas cost NT$2.1 per hop, while taxis in the New Territories and Lantau Island cost NT$1.9. For subsequent journeys, taxis in urban areas and the New Territories cost NT$1.4 per hop, and taxis in Lantau Island cost NT$1.6 per hop. The waiting time charges will be adjusted accordingly due to the increase in meter jumping charges after the flag falls, and other additional charges will remain unchanged.

The average increase rates for urban, New Territories and Lantau taxis are 8.86%, 9.56% and 10.92% respectively.

The Transport and Housing Bureau stated that when the government approved this fare increase application, it fully considered factors such as public acceptance, changes in taxi operating costs, the income of employees, and the fare gap between taxis and other public transportation.

According to operational data, after adjusting for inflation, the average monthly net income of rental car drivers in urban areas and the New Territories increased slightly last year compared with the level in 2019, while the average monthly net income of rental car drivers in Lantau Island fell. The average monthly net income of car owners, drivers and taxi owners also dropped significantly last year compared with 2019. The industry hopes that the taxi fare increase will help increase the income of frontline drivers and attract more new people to join the industry. It will also encourage employees to improve services and invest in more new equipment to enhance the overall service quality and promote the long-term healthy development of the industry.

The Bureau also mentioned that the Transport Department issued an invitation for taxi fleet licenses on the 12th of last month, with a view to announcing the application results in the middle of this year. The Transport Department will require taxi fleet operators to commence operations no more than 12 months after being granted a fleet license.
