The arctic fox is the unique species in the genus Alopex, which belongs to the Canidae family, and is a small fox native to the arctic regions.

Natal dens are typically found in rough terrain, which can provide more protection for the offspring. However, parents will place the pups in nearby caves to avoid predators. When the red foxes are not in the area, the Arctic foxes will use the dens previously occupied by the red fox. The chief prey in the tundra is lemmings, so the white fox is often called the "lemming fox." The reproduction rates of the white fox reflect the lemming population density, which fluctuates cyclically every 3-5 years. When lemmings are plentiful, the white fox can give birth to 18 cubs, but they generally do not breed when food is limited.
