In ancient China, it was a big problem that women have small, smooth "moon-shaped" legs (that is, with deep insteps) that a whole custom is dedicated to leg-binding is developed. This is very painful for women, but the standards for the beautiful legs of the time were very helpful in setting the standard of overall attractiveness; women with small feet are considered noble and aristocratic.
