About Antigone مترجمة

Antigone novel translated into Arabic

Antigone is a novel by the French writer Jean Anouilh, derived from a sad Greek story called "Oedipus the King."

The novel tells about a husband who was awaiting his birth with his wife. One day, this couple heard a revelation that they were having a beautiful date, because they were going to have a child. But what this child will do is very strange. He will kill his father and marry his mother! The parents were terrified and panicked, so they threw the child away while he was an infant so that he would not be able to do what he was told to do.

A middle-class family took care of the child and raised him as a real family until he grew stronger. All this time, they never hinted to him that he was not their real son. They hid from him, and they only found him and adopted him. The young man's name was Oedipus, and one day the same oracle returned, this time telling the same young man that he would kill his father and marry his mother. Adoeb ran away to get rid of any possibility of what the revelation had told him to happen, ignorant of the fact that the ones he ran away from were not his real parents that the revelation intended. While he was on the road, he encountered a man and a dispute occurred between them, which ended with Oedipus killing that man. After that, the young man heard that there was an animal called the Sphinx (a Greek mythical animal with the wings of a falcon, the head of a human, and the body of a lion) that had occupied a city called “Tep” and was spreading terror in everyone and refusing to leave unless someone solved the puzzle. "Oedipus" set out for that city, solved the riddle, liberated the city, and became king. Then he married a widowed princess and gave birth to four sons: "Ethiocles", "Paulinus", "Ismene", and "Antigone". During Oedipus' search for the killer of his wife's former husband, the princess, he learned that he was the man who killed him. Then he learned that his wife's ex-husband was his father, that his wife was his mother, and that those whom he thought were his parents were only taking care of him after they found him thrown. He realized that what the oracle claimed had come true, despite He tried to escape, so he gouged out his eyes and became homeless. After the death of King Oedipus, his sons fought for the throne and killed each other. The two girls went to live with their uncle, the ruler, and their cousin, Haemon, proposed to Antigone because of her beautiful essence. Here begins the novel Antigone by John Anouilh. The events begin with Antigone trying to convince her sister, Asmene, to bury their brother. The king prevented his burial and left his body exposed to rot as punishment. "Ismene" was a weak person, so she refused to disobey the king's order. So "Antigone" decided to bury him. One time, she tried to cover her brother's body and was almost exposed, but she survived, leaving some evidence. The corpse guard received all kinds of reprimands because he did not know who had done it, but the next time the guard found who had done it and revealed the matter of Antigone’s attempt to oppose the king’s order to bury her brother. She confessed her sin and decided to do what she intended to do, even if she threatened to behead her, and despite all the pleas of her fiancé, the king’s son, whose name was “Haimon,” for her to stop and not end her life at the hands of the king. But she insisted and the story ended with the death of her and her fiancé, who was trying to save her because he was unable to live without her because he loved her.
