An asana is a yoga pose that can be classified as a sitting meditation pose, and later extended to include any type of position in hatha yoga and modern yoga. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali define "asana" as "a comfortable position that is steady". Patanjali mentions the ability to sit for extended periods of time.

Asanas can be classified in different ways but most authors agree on a set of types based on the position of the head and feet (standing sitting reclining) as well as whether balancing is required or has an effect on the spine (forward bend backbend twist). Mittra classifies poses using his own system such as "Floor & Supine Poses".

In the Western world asanas (postures) are typically taught in different styles by the various schools of yoga. Some poses like Trikonasana are common to many of them but they’re not always performed in the same way. Some independently documented approaches are described below.
