Beginners Yoga tutorial to do the full split pose, or Hanumanasana

Beginner Splits in Yoga

The full split pose, or Hanumanasana is a challenging yet highly beneficial pose:

• Stretches the hamstrings, groin and hip flexors

• Strengthens the pelvic floor muscles

• Strengthens the abdominal muscles

• Relieves sciatica pain

Hanumanasana, is a hard position to master, and it's one that doesn't come easily to a lot of people. It's named after Hanuman, the Hindu deity who is said to have taken a giant leap all the way from the south of India to the Himalayas to reclaim his love (hence the wide-open stance of your legs in this pose).

Follow these simple steps and stretches and learn how to do the splits, and gain flexibility in the lower body in this Beginners Yoga tutorial! These Yoga poses are great for any Yoga enthusiast, Cheerleader, Dancer, or even Gymnasts to learn how to safely do a split.

A word of caution: Your hamstrings are strong, but delicate creatures, and a tear can take more than two years to fully recover. As with all yoga pose breakdowns, take this one step and breathe at a time. Never attempt a full split without warming your body up first.
