Imperial Four Gospels of Ivan Alexander is illuminated manuscript Gospel Book in the Middle Bulgarian, prepared and illustrated in 1355-1356 for Tsar Ivan Alexander the Second Bulgarian Empire. The manuscript is considered one of the most important manuscripts of medieval Bulgarian culture. The manuscript, now in the British Library (Add. MS 39627), contains the text of the four Gospels, illustrated with 366 miniatures and consists of 286 parchment folios, 33 by 24.3 cm in size.

Bible translations of contemporary Bulgarian date from 1820 and were largely organized by Protestant missionaries. Bulgarian Orthodox Church initially prefers to continue using the old Bulgarian.

Archimandrite Theodosius, abbot of the monastery Bistrita in Romania, translated the New Testament for the British and Foreign Bible Society, which was printed in St. Petersburg in 1823. "It was started by Archimandrite Theodosius, with the sanction of Gregory, Patriarch of Constantinople. (Gospel of Matthew in Church Slavonic and Bulgarian 1823) was published by the Russian Bible Society." This attempt to translate the Bible into modern Bulgarian characterized by poor grammatical style and is strongly influenced by the version of Church Slavonic. The whole issue was sent to St. Petersburg and is said to have been destroyed there. The BFBS also been agreed nationalist journalist Konstantin Fotinov, who translated the New Testament, but BFBS not approve it because "he was neither Slav [ONIC], nor Bulgarian".

An independent attempt to publish a Bulgarian translation of the New Testament occurred in 1828, as Peter Sapunov and his brother Father Seraphim published a translation of the four Gospels in the metropolitan press in Wallachia Bucharest (Romania). This translation was completed in the eastern Bulgarian dialect.

In 1835 Bulgarian monk West University began a new translation of the New Testament. The translation was completed on April 18, 1838 The translation was done in Bulgarian dialect from the area of ​​Upper Cuma (today Blagoevgrad region of Macedonia) .In 1840 5000 copies of the first complete translation of the New Testament are printed in Smyrna by the British and Foreign Bible community. A second edition, which is printed in Smyrna in 1850 was almost exactly reprint edition 1840. A third edition followed in 1853 with 15,000 copies. The fourth edition was published in 1857 in Bucharest, and the type first civilian heroes was used. In 1859, two editions were published. In 1866, a new edition of "pocket" with a revised text by Elias Riggs and Dr. Albert Long was printed in Constantinople. The New Testament was revised and reprinted nine times.

In the period 1840-1860 on (Turnovo) dialect East was adopted as a literary Bulgarian language and Macedonian dialect, which was translated the New Testament, it was widely rejected. Until 1858 West University over much of the Old Testament. Riggs meets West University and discussed possible revision of the Bulgarian New Testament to remove the Macedonian dialect elements. Neophyte objected review so that Riggs took translation and returned to Constantinople. In January 1859 Riggs invited Bulgarian teacher Christodoulos Kostovich to help with the review.
