The Organic Comprehensive Criminal Code, often referred to by its acronym COIP, is a systematized and organized set of legal norms of a punitive nature, that is, a legislative compendium that establishes crimes and penalties under the Ecuadorian criminal system.

The COIP has as background the Criminal Code, created in the year 1971, which contained 636 articles and has been amended 46 times until 2010. The new code is created because of the need to incorporate new criminal types because of the emergence of new punishable modalities, detach from the influence of the Italian Code, known as the Rococo Code and the Napoleonic Code, as well as promote strategic mechanisms for the adaptation of criminal behaviors against humanity, human rights and gender.
