The Constitution of the Republic of Senegal

It was adopted following the constitutional referendum of January 7, 2001, which received 94% of positive votes.

The prerogatives of the President of the Republic are extended. He can dissolve the National Assembly of Senegal. The number of deputies is 150. The Senate of Senegal is abolished - it will be re-established in 2007 as will the Economic and Social Council.

Constitutional revision of March 20, 2016

In March 2016, a constitutional referendum is scheduled to reduce the presidential term from seven to five years.

A constitutional revision project is submitted to referendum in 2016. It provides in particular for limiting the number of presidential terms to two (5 years). He also proposes the establishment of a High Council of Territorial Collectivities to replace the Senate which was abolished upon the accession of President Macky Sall to the Presidency of the Republic. Senegalese residing abroad will also elect their deputies to the National Assembly.
