About Crossings (Newcastle Poetry Fe

Poetic responses to the art of Sean Scully

As part of the 2018 Newcastle Poetry Festival, eight poets have been commissioned to respond to eight paintings exhibited in Sean Scully: 1970, a major retrospective co-hosted by the Hatton and Laing Art Galleries between February and May 2018.

The Crossings poetry app allows visitors to both galleries to read and listen to the poets' work while looking at the art in situ. Simply select the gallery you are currently visiting and then choose the poem you would like to read or hear by selecting the painting that inspired it.

Thanks are due to the following: Sean Scully for his blessing on this project and to Faye Fleming for her help with logistics; to the Newcastle Institute for Creative Arts Practice for funding this project as an interdisciplinary “crossing” between visual art and poetry; and to Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums for hosting our poets and enabling the conversation.

Developed by Peter Hebden, Newcastle Centre for the Literary Arts, Newcastle University. Peter Hebden's research project 'Creative Digital Interventions into Poetry' is funded by the AHRC National Productivity Investment Fund.
