Eltz Castle is a majestic castle perched on top of a cliff in a small wooded valley in Germany. By luck or strategy, the court mostly survived the ravages of war. Besides its magnificent appearance, the other interesting fact about Eltz Castle is that it has owners the same family for over 800 years.

Apart from its siege during the 14th century, Eltz Castle did not see much military action during its long history, despite being a fortified structure in a strategic position.

In 1331, Balduin of Luxembourg, the Archbishop-elect of Trier, sought to strengthen peace in his constituency. The free knights perceived this as a violation of their right to private warfare, and an alliance was formed to confront Bauldin, including the lords of Eltz Castle. As a result, the archbishop chief built a siege castle outside Eltz Castle, where he could bombard his target.

However, cutting weapons to Eltz Castle eventually forced the knights to surrender. Although much of the castle was destroyed, Eltz Castle was not destroyed.

Eltz Castle had survived the ravages of war in the centuries that followed. In 1618 the Thirty Years' War broke out in Central Europe. During this conflict, the occupying French army destroyed many castles on the Rhine. However, Eltz Castle was saved thanks to the advantage of its location and its master's diplomatic skill.

In 1786, the Eltz-Rodendorf branch of the family ended, and shares of the castle passed to the Eltz-Kempenich department. In 1815, Count Hugo Philipp purchased ownership of the Eltz-Rübenach department from the Eltz-Kempenich branch. As a result, Eltz Castle once again became the property of one person and has remained so ever since.

The owner of the castle, dr. Karl Grafvonundzu Eltz-Kempenich, nicknamed Faustvon Stromberg, is the head of the 33rd generation of this family.
