The New Testament is the part of the Christian Bible made up of a canonical (authorized) set of books and letters written after the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. It is so designated from Tertullian in the Christian Church. Contrary to the Hebrew Tanach, called by the Christians Old Testament, the Christians, with the exception of the so-called Messianic Jews, do not have the New Testament in common with the Jews.

The purpose of each book, who the author was, when and to whom it was written is examined. The message of each book is identified and how it relates to the others.

The use of the term "testament" comes from the Hebrew word berith ('alliance, pact, agreement or provisions between two contracting parties'), through the Greek diatheké, and the Latin testamentum. Some authors present the names Old and New Testament that designate the two great sections into which the Christian Bible is divided as the result of a misinterpretation of the word diatheké, which means: 'desire' or 'will', and also 'agreement' or 'covenant'.1 With this criterion diatheké in Greek would refer to the old and the new covenant of God with men rather than to the Scriptures themselves.

Composition of the New Testament:

The composition of the canonical New Testament was gradually fixed in the first centuries of the new religion. The oldest list is supposed to have been drawn up around the year 170.
