About Forgiveness in the Bible

Empowering Bible Verses for Forgiveness

We have all been in situations where we have done wrong and desire forgiveness—from a spouse, family member, friend, or even a co-worker. Sometimes the person we most need forgiveness from is ourselves. And then there are the times when someone is asking us for forgiveness, and we have to look deeply in ourselves to offer it, no strings attached. It's hard! Whether you are giving or receiving forgiveness, it's a very powerful thing. Luckily, the Bible offers tons of guidance on the topic, along with helpful Bible verses about healing and Bible verses about love, which can go hand in hand with forgiveness. After all, to forgive is to show love, and love is the most important thing we can give to our friends, family, neighbors, and even strangers.

Bible verses about giving and forgiving are peppered throughout the scriptures. Generosity with finances and generosity with our forgiveness come from the same source – compassion. Forgiveness can be a struggle for most. In life, people behave in ways that can offend us. Holding a grudge might feel natural, but the Bible encourages us to forgive.

Recent studies on forgiveness show that practising forgiveness can improve our mental and physical health. But how do we practice forgiveness and experience the peace it brings? Reading these Bible verses about forgiveness will inspire you to forgive others and help you remember that we have been forgiven thanks to Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. All of these Bible verses about forgiveness have been taken from the NIV version of the Bible.

Let’s face it: Forgiving others (and yourself) is sometimes easier said than done. However, it doesn’t have to be. So the next time you find yourself feeling hurt by someone’s actions or overwhelmed with frustration over a situation that occurred, turn to the Bible for advice. That way, you won’t start to feel all the negative side effects from the stress of those situations on your mind, body and soul.

When someone does something to upset us, it can be hard to let that go and move on. But harboring frustration or ill will towards someone else is actually just a punishment for ourselves. Luckily, there are Bible verses about forgiveness to help you through that very situation. A majority of them are about how we must forgive, lest we not be forgiven. But, we must also forgive, because God forgives us no matter our transgressions.

Forgiveness doesn't necessarily mean that the person is not guilty of whatever they did to upset us. Forgiveness doesn't mean forgetting. Rather, forgiveness means letting go of the pain the incident is causing us. We forgive to give ourselves peace of mind, and in hopes that one day someone will return the favor if we ever offend them.

So whether a family member starts an argument, a child throws a fit, or a friend isn't there during a time of need, the Bible helps us to see the importance of forgiveness for transgressions small and large. Rely on these passages whenever you need a reminder that holding a grudge doesn't serve anyone, least of all ourselves. Moses prays here, as he did after the making of the golden calf (Exodus 32), acting, as often in the Pentateuch, as a covenant mediator. He points out that, were God to fulfill his threat to annihilate Israel, the nations would say that the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land.
