Fuenteovejuna is a play of the Spanish Golden Age by playwright Lope de Vega.

Lope de Vega drew in this work one of his most complex comedies. The collectivity, depository of the right of resistance if the hierarchy loses its legitimacy, makes use of that right and re-establishes order. In a first action, intrahistoric, the Commander is tyrant and lascivious with his vassals; in the second, historical action, it breaks the political order inspiring the taking of Ciudad Real against the King. The author raises the subject according to the mental categories of the time.

Taken from a historical fact, the plot takes place in the town of Fuente Obejuna in Cordoba in the time of the Catholic Monarchs (1474-1516). The drama is presented with a collective protagonist (the inhabitants of the town), as in the Numancia (1585) Cervantes or in the Persians of Aeschylus. As with much of Shakespeare's dramas, the Fuenteovejuna de Lope has achieved the status of a symbol, that of the iconographic-theatrical prototype of "the union of the people against oppression and outrage."
