The municipality grave field is located in the south of the district Schmalkalden-Meiningen, in Thuringia. The municipality has 12 districts, bringing together approximately 5,500 inhabitants. The entire municipality covers an area of ​​11,670 hectares, or about 117 square kilometers.

For 01.12.2007 the municipality grave field created by the merger of the formerly independent political communities Behrungen, Berkach, Bibra, Exdorf with district Obendorf, Jüchsen, Nordheim, Queienfeld, Rentwertshausen, Schwickershausen and Wolfmannshausen. On 01.01.2012 Bauerbach happened.
