i loved google for over 10 years. sadly, it now sucks.

this app is filled with minor flaws that are borderline dangerous if you trust it. makes us losing time, at it's best. directions that leads to literal dam flooded roads or unsustainable off-road tracks.

the fact it's filled with good reviews and user added content such as restaurants and points if interest, makes it all the worse, because now people think that's the only way to go... but the only way should be openstreetmaps.org an actual initiative to have a decent map protocol, free for everyone to use, and it's already filled with more actual map data than google!

the other fact that it's still working so much better for car navigation than any other alternative also adds up to how terribly bad it actually is, because of the minor dangerous flaws, but again, because it draws people to this trap, like flies into the light of death. it only really works with paved and hugely circulated roads. do not use google maps if you want to explore the unexplored!

among yet so many other flaws, they want you to believe your data belong to you, with takeout.google but that data is rather hard to use anywhere else plus it's only on their servers and only available to you at manual request. yes, you can wake up one day and notice you've lost it all if google either loses it or decide to lock you out. yes, it happened.

when i do, however, find a good alternative able to replace it all for me (sharing maps, sharing location, search everything, reviews, contact, navigation, etc, and it should abuse google API while there's no better option) plus it's OSS, i'll publish it here: cregox.net/maps
