About Guía de Alcolea

In this guide you will find information of interest to visit Alcolea

This guide to Alcolea will be very useful for moving around its streets, locating restaurants, cafes, bars, accommodation or places of tourist or cultural interest that can be visited. In addition, you will be able to find out when its main festivals are celebrated, or discover incredible trails, fountains and stone sinks.

The town of Alcolea is located in the western part of the Province of Almería, within the Alpujarra Almeriense, the Lower Alpujarra. Its municipal term has an area of 67 km² and limits to the North with the municipalities of Nevada in the Province of Granada, Bayárcal and Paterna del Río; to the East with Laujar de Andarax; to the South with those of Berja and Turón in the Province of Granada; and to the west with that of Ugíjar and Murtas, both in the Province of Granada.

The crops are irrigated, with the olive tree, a Mediterranean species par excellence that is present everywhere in this little mountain village, the element that defines Alcolea in the best possible way. It is impossible to think of this Alpujarra population and not assimilate it to its olives or oil, as this noble tree spreads in an amazing way throughout all the cultivated lands of the municipality in endless terraces and paratas that surprise those who visit it. Another unique feature of the centenary olive trees of Alcolea is their unique height, nothing less than the tallest in the world! Names like Inizar, Guarros, Jocanes, Tajaule, Benomar... testify to the passage of the Muslims through those lands and the mark they left for almost 800 years.

In the town of Alcolea, the Church of San Sebastián stands out, a Mudejar-style building built in the 16th century, although due to the damage it suffered during the Moorish Rebellion it had to be reformed between the 17th and 18th centuries. Also in the vicinity of this town is the Hermitage of San Sebastián and San Ildelfonso of Mudejar style from the beginning of the 17th century, where the frescoes in which the twelve apostles are represented stand out. Of the rest of the towns in the municipality, the church of Darrícal, from the 7th century, and that of Lucainena, from the 8th century, stand out.

Its patron saint festivities are on September 4 of Santa Rosa de Viterbo, patron saint of the population; on these dates the town's festival is celebrated. And on January 20, San Sebastián, patron saint of the town. Other Festivals of interest to visit us are the Route of Centennial Olive Trees, Carnival with the Burial of the Fox, Cruces de Mayo...

The street map will allow you to locate each place of interest and each bar or restaurant where you can taste the rich products of the land, delicacies such as food and traditional pastries as well as one of the best olive oils in the world.
