Charlotte Bronte - Jane Eyre

The novel was first published in 1847 by Smith, Elder & Company, London, with the title Jane Eyre: An Autobiography under the pseudonym of Currer Bell.

Immediately after publication, the book deserved the readers' love and good reviews of critics, including William Thackeray, to whom Bronte devoted the second edition.

The novel was translated into Russian two times. The first was released in 1955 by Vera Stanevich in the publishing house "Lenizdat" under the name "Jen Eyre" (the first name in Jane's name was absent).

This translation was made not from the original, but from the German edition, and in it (apparently, at the request of censorship) there were some poems and paragraphs with religious content, although most of the religious references remained untouched.

In the late 1980s, when the publishing house "Fiction" was preparing to publish a three-volume work of the sisters Bronte, Stanevich translated missing fragments in the translation of Irina Gurova.

Then, in 2000, in the publishing house "AST" a translation was made, entirely by Gurova (with now Jane Eyre). Both translations are repeatedly reprinted.

The narration is from the first person, the action takes place somewhere in the northern part of England at the end of the epoch of the reign of George III. Jane Eyre's parents died when she was very young, and her brother, Mr Reed, took it to her, who soon died too.

The narrative begins when Jane is only ten years old. This is a small and weak health, an impressionable child, with a lively character, closed more by necessity than by nature.

She lives in the estate of Gateshead, owned by her aunt, Sarah Reed, a powerful and selfish woman whose children, cousins ​​Jane - John, Eliza and Georgiana - fit her. Everyone in the house treats little Jane is extremely unfair.

Jane really wants to deserve the love of her aunt, but she barely tolerates it. The fact is that the marriage of Jane's parents was a misalignment - her mother, being a girl from a good family, married a poor vicar, because of which the whole family, except her brother, Mr. Reed, disowned her.

More or less good relations with Jane only with the maid Bessie Lee. Once the conflict reaches a critical point. John Reed in the blood chops Jane's head and, when he again swings, she angrily rushes at him.

Immediately screaming, Mrs. Reed did not notice Jane's wound again, and punished her by sending her to the Red Room where Mr. Reed had once died. Jane begs to punish her somehow differently, but in vain.

The girl piously believes that in the Red room the ghost of her uncle lives. From fear, Jane becomes ill, she faints.
