The Greek national anthem is composed of the first two verses of the Hymn to Freedom (Ύμνος εις την Ελευθερίαν / Ýmnos eis tin Eleftherían), written by the poet Dionysios Solomos in 1823. In the 158 verses of the poem, Solomos exalts the splendor which contrasts with the suffering of slavery under the Turks, hence the struggle for freedom whose culminating points are the (re) capture of the cities of Tripolitsa and Mesolonghi but also the naval battles, to end with the Call of Freedom to Unity and the Brotherhood of the Greeks.
