If you like working in your garden, have you considered getting a garden clock to put up? Completely aside from the fact that it can be a useful thing to have (I know most people remove their wrist watches when gardening) to be a focal point in itself. There are decorative wrought iron pieces of craftsmanship for an old fashioned look, terra-cotta natural kinds that will eventually grow over with moss, why you could even install a sun dial!

Here is a good idea for a weekend or holiday project with the kids, maybe as a present for mum or dad.

While you can spend anywhere between a lot and a little on a clock for the outdoors, you can fairly easily adapt an old house clock to do the job.

The most important challenge is waterproofing, making sure no moisture gets in between the glass / plastic lens and the surround. Silicone sealant (the same stuff you fix leaky pipes and roofs with) does a wonderful job. Open up the clock, and put a generous smear of silicone all around where the joins are. Just remember to put new batteries in before you glue it all shut - eye time it gets opened you will need to re seal it, and that can be a pain.

Once you have sealed up the old clock, bring some creativity. One good idea is to make a wooden surround, and put the sealed up inside the clock. Or fix it to a standing pole, and collage with sea shells, acorns, or colorful river pebbles.You get an instant old, weathered looking clock for the garden or yard! A great gift for the avid gardener.

Your product will have a limited life span of course, but if you do a good job with the sealant issue expect a few years of life.

Just use your imagination! The whole project does not have to cost more than a few dollars.
