Shahab Nama is autobiography of Qudrat Ullah Shahab.Qudrat Ullah Shahab was an eminent Urdu writer and civil servant from Pakistan. Shahab holds the distinction of having served as the Principal Secretary to three heads of state; Governor General Ghulam Muhammad, President Iskander Mirza and President Ayub Khan. He went on to serve as the Ambassador of Pakistan to the Netherlands in 1962 and later as Information Secretary of Pakistan and Education Secretary of Pakistan.

“NOTHING I have said is factual except the bits that sound like fiction,” said Clive James in his Unreliable Memoirs. I cannot say for sure whether it mars the image of a writer when the bits of fact in his or her autobiography sound like fiction, but I am positive that when bits of fiction sound like facts, it shows the writer's enviable command over the craft of story-telling.

Qudratullah Shahab's Shahabnama is most probably Urdu's best-selling autobiography. But many bits of fact described in it have been questioned as they sound more like fiction. Keeping in view Shahab's reputation as a man of integrity and a Sufi, one can say that, in the words of Mark Twain, he mainly told the truth but there were things that he stretched. Shahabnama is one of the books which, just like historical novels, make one believe that a term like 'faction' - a blend of 'fact' and 'fiction' - does exist, though frowned upon by many a critic.

شہاب نامہ قدرت اللہ شہاب کی خودنوشت کہانی ہے۔ شہاب نامہ مسلمانان برصغیر کی تحریک آزادی کے پس منظر، مطالبہ پاکستان، قیام پاکستان اور تاریخ پاکستان کی چشم دید داستان ہے۔ جو حقیقی کرداروں کی زبان سے بیان ہوئی ہے۔ شہاب نامہ دیکھنے میں ضخیم اور پڑھنے میں مختصر کتاب ہے۔ شہاب نامہ امکانی حد تک سچی کتاب ہے۔ قدرت اللہ شہاب نے کتاب کے ابتدائییہ میں لکھا ہے کہ،

میں نے حقائق کو انتہائی احتیاط سے ممکنہ حد تک اسی رنگ میں پیش کرنے کی کوشش کی ہے جس رنگ میں وہ مجھے نظرآئے۔

جو لوگ قدرت اللہ شہاب کو جانتے ہیں ان کو معلوم ہے کہ یہ ایک سادہ اور سچے انسان کے الفاظ ہیں۔ قدرت اللہ شہاب نے اس کتاب میں وہی واقعات لکھے ہیں جو براہ راست ان کے علم اور مشاہدے میں آئے اس لیے واقعاتی طور پر ان کی تاریخی صداقت مسلم ہے۔ اور بغیر تاریخی شواہد یا دستاویزی ثبوت کے ان کی صداقت میں شک کرنے کا کوئی جواز نہیں۔ البتہ حقائق کی تشریح و تفسیر یا ان کے بارے میں زاویہ نظر سے اختلاف ہو سکتا ہے۔ عمومی طور پر شہاب نامہ کے چار حصے ہیں:

1. قدرت اللہ کا بچپن اور تعلیم

2. آئی سی ایس میں داخلہ اور دور ملازمت

3. پاکستان کے بارے میں تاثرات

4. دینی و روحانی تجربات و مشاہدات

ان چاروں حصوں کی اہمیت جداگانہ ہے لیکن ان میں ایک عنصر مشترک ہے اور وہ ہے مصنف کی مسیحائی۔ وہ جس واقعہ کا ذکر کرتے ہیں وہ لفظوں کے سیاہ خانوں سے نکل کر قاری کے سامنے وقوع پزیر ہونا شروع کر دیتا ہے۔ وہ جس کردار کا نقشہ کھینچتے ہیں وہ ماضی کے سرد خانے سے نکل کر قاری کے ساتھ ہنسنے بولنے لگتا ہے۔
