Discover the hidden side of the tapestry of the Apocalypse

This application allows to discover, with interactive images and video, the hidden face of the Apocalypse tapestry. This course reveals the other side of the tapestry, invisible to the public eye, the secrets of its manufacture, and numerous details.

After an introduction on the history of the hanging (timeline), the evocation of his subject and the order, the application provides a video to understand the techniques of making a tapestry.

It then explains the meaning of reading and of this monumental work structure diagrams showing its composition.

The visitor can then select the 6 rooms of the hanging, different points of interest:

The first part:

-Video horsemen of the Apocalypse, to discuss the disappearance of some scenes.

-Scene "The winner white horse": this is a very fragmented and rewoven stage presence of a layer to show the re-weaving zones and a photo of the reverse.

The second part:

-Scene "The crowd of elected": evocation of medieval society, identification of the characters.

-Scene "The sinking": points of weaving and their effect (transparency, relief ...)

-Scene "The myriad riders": identification of soldiers which, no doubt, the Black Prince, son of the king of England.

The third part:

-Scene "Woman clothed with the sun" you dynamism symbolic aspect of the composition.

-Game observation: What spitting dragon on the wallpaper?

The fourth part:

-Scènes "The sleep of the just and the harvest of the elect" the colors of upside.

-Game on the Stage: "The harvest of the damned" inversion scenes: weaving error? Will the painter or tapestry?

The fifth part:

-The angels sky band musicians have typical instruments of the Middle Ages. The application allows to listen to: "Press the angel's image to discover the sound of his instrument."

Who are these Great characters? Evocation of heraldry.

-Scene "The Great Prostitute on the waters' mirror and comb, of medieval objects, the symbolic.

-Scene "The New Jerusalem": a focus on urban medieval architecture: ramparts, towers, church doors, harrow ...

This route allows to show the Apocalypse Tapestry in a different light, highlighting the back and showing details. Its subject and its iconography make a great paper on the historical, social and political of the late fourteenth century.

To complete the course, the application allows us to discover several places that hosted the tapestry during its history or that contain works that were inspired by its theme and composition: Cathedral Saint-Maurice / Musée Jean Lurcat and contemporary tapestry / the Catholic University of the West, which houses the works of Maurice La Pintière.
