The Art of War (Simplified Chinese: 孙子兵 法; Traditional Chinese: 孫子兵 法; pinyin: Sūn Zǐ bīngfǎ; literally: "Master Sun's Military Methods") is a short treatise on Chinese military strategy, dating from the Spring period. and Autumns (simplified Chinese: 春秋 时代; traditional Chinese: 春秋 時代; pinyin: Chūnqiū Shídài). Attributed to strategist Sun Zi (simplified Chinese: 孙子; traditional Chinese: 孫子; pinyin: Sūn Zǐ, literally: "Master Sun"; often called "Sun Tzu" in the West), the text is structured around thirteen chapters devoted to l 'rational analysis of the different dimensions of war and which bring out the principles of the intelligent pursuit of a victorious war: based on an indirect strategy, all of economy, cunning, knowledge of the adversary, psychological action, intended to leave to the shock only the role of finishing blow dealt to a distraught enemy.

The implicit conception of war, as envisioned by Sun Zi, takes place in a world where it is practiced within the same society, imperial China, with limited goals and within the framework of generally rules. accepted, before the barbarian invasions that will determine China's defensive strategy behind its Great Wall.

The first of the Chinese military classics in fame and perhaps for the date of composition, The Art of War is the cornerstone of a rich body of strategic thinking compiled in 1078, at the instigation of Emperor Shenzong. of the Song dynasty (simplified Chinese: 宋 神宗; pinyin: Sòng Shénzōng; literally: "Spiritual ancestor of the Song"), under the title of the Seven classics of military art (simplified Chinese: 武 經 七 書; traditional Chinese: 武经 七 书; pinyin: Wǔjīng qī shū).

The Art of War has had a tremendous influence on Chinese and Japanese military traditions, and is still taught in China, Taiwan, and military schools throughout the Sinized world; it constitutes the foundation of contemporary strategic thought in Asia.

The work was translated in 1772 by the French Jesuit Father Joseph-Marie Amiot and was very successful before falling into oblivion. The translation into English by Lionel Giles in 1910, followed by the victory of Mao Zedong (simplified Chinese: 毛泽东; traditional Chinese: 毛澤東; pinyin: Máo Zédōng) in 1949, brought attention back to this manual of indirect strategy. The Art of War becomes a canon of Western strategic thought, in turn deeply influenced by this treaty which analyzes, with a considerable advance, war as a matter of vital importance for States, capable as such. lend themselves to a rigorous analysis, the meaning of which is dictated by peace.
