The National Commission for Free Textbooks (CONALITEG) is a decentralized public body linked to the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) of Mexico whose objective is to provide free books to basic education students enrolled in the national education system.

It was created on February 12, 1959, by decree of the then President of Mexico Adolfo López Mateos, and was Secretary of Public Education Jaime Torres Bodet. He delivered his first copies in 1960, with the text that corresponded to the first through fifth grades. elementary grade; the sixth grade was delivered a year later. Its first president was Martín Luis Guzmán, and its general secretary, Miguel Ángel Menéndez Reyes. As of the administrative reform of President José López Portillo, in 1980, the Commission became a decentralized public body, and then its leader became director, instead of president.

In 1962, for the cover of the books, the work of Jorge González Camarena La Patria was used, which would become an icon of educational books. In 1966, it published its first print run in Braille. By 1982, he created his series of monographs on the states of the Republic.

As of the date of this article, it edits and publishes textbooks for preschool, primary, secondary, telesecundaria, indigenous (42 languages), Braille and Macrotype with its own printing of approximately 25 million copies. Given that it requires covering an offer of more than 200 million, the rest is obtained through bidding to private companies.
