Why labiograms?

Of all the studies used in phonetics to visualize sounds, labiography - focusing on the characteristics of the position of the lips - is the most readable for children. The application presents only those labiograms that have the characteristic, legible layout of the lips.

There are additional markings in the photos that indicate the character of the sound.

Period - means a non-persistent sound. This means that it should be pronounced briefly and precisely, without adding unnecessary sounds y or i to it: l, p, b, c, dz, cz, dż, ć, j.

A dash - means permanent. It can be pronounced for a long time if we do not change the position of the speech organs during articulation: a, e, i, o, u, y, m, f, w, s, z, sz, ż, ś, ź. Also r is a persistent sound, although we pronounce it thanks to the trembling of the tip of the tongue.

Broken line at the level of the tongue - is a sign of a tremor (vibration) of the tip of the tongue by the phone r. In the photo, the letters l and r look similar.

Up Arrow - Prompts the position of the tongue in the mouth. This is a sign that the tip of the tongue is raised, vertical: l, r, sz, ż, cz, j.

Wave at the level of the larynx - means a voiced consonant from such a pair of consonants, where the opposition is a voiced / voiceless sound: w, z, dz, ż, dż, ź, dż.

Thanks to the exercises performed with the Logominy application, we develop the child's articulation awareness (positioning of the lips, tongue, teeth when pronouncing sounds). The speech therapist can use the application in a creative way, offering a game, for example, guessing the sounds that the girl and the boy present in the photo. Each of the 25 boards is a task for the child to recreate the presented sound in front of the camera on a smartphone or tablet. The speech therapist finishing work with the application can save the photos taken during the session.

This is not the only way to work with the application. The speech therapist can use lesson plans with the option to save them as PDF.
