With Maelstrom you watch and interact with flows simulated on your very phone or tablet. This is known as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) but Maelstrom does not require a super-computer - all it takes is your Android device! The simulation is carried out real-time, allowing you to stir the flow using the tip of your finger.

Instructions:

The app simulates fluid flow in the direction of gravitational acceleration; change the direction of the flow by tilting the device.

Model details:

Maelstrom is a realtime fluid flow simulator. It solve the vorticity formulation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations via a vortex particle method.

Time integration: Forward Euler.

Spatial approximations: Second order finite difference.

Iterative solver: Geometric multigrid.
