Spirit is a person, not just a force. But when we start with the first page of the Bible, before creation even begins, we see a picture of God's spirit hovering over the dark, disordered waters of the earth, ready to spread good and creation. In the Bible, whenever we see a description of God's spirit, such as what is shown in the first few verses of the Bible, the Hebrew word ruakh is used. Ruakh can describe the invisible, powerful energy that is essential to life, making "Spirit" an appropriate description of God's Spirit.

Of course, the religious leaders of the time viewed these actions as a threat and had Jesus killed. Yet God's spirit is at work. When the disciples saw Jesus rise from the tomb, they announced that he was shining with God's spirit.

When Jesus appeared to his closest followers, he breathed the Holy Spirit into them, empowering them also to spread God's goodness around the world. Soon after, God's spirit envelops all of his followers. Today, thanks to Christ and the power He has given His followers, God's spirit continues to hover over a dark and chaotic world, slowly healing it and working it until the day it is restored to its former glory.

The Holy Spirit is a wonderful person, friend, guide, counselor, and teacher. He was with God the Father and Jesus in creation, and it was through His power that the commandments of God the Father were revealed. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us, [Prayer] is an action of God and man, flowing both from the Holy Spirit and from ourselves, directed wholly to the Father, in union with the human will of the Son of God made man (CCC 2564).

One beautiful and ancient prayer to the Holy Spirit was written by St. Augustine, a fourth-century saint bishop. He had a special way of speaking, and his prayer to the Holy Spirit can lift an uninspired soul to God.
