Museu da Água

Come to know the heritage of Water through the nuclei of the Water Museum.

The Museu da Água is a museum dispersed throughout the city of Lisbon, consisting of the Águas Livres Aqueduct, the Mãe d'Água das Amoreiras Reservoir, the Patriarcal Reservoir and the Barbadinhos Steam Station. Each location is unique! In the Águas Livres Aqueduct you can walk through the Alcântara Valley on a course of 941 meters between Campolide and Monsanto Forest Park, watching the view of the city from the largest arch at a height of 65 meters. The Mãe d'Água Reservoir of the Amoreiras stands out for its imposing waterfall and reservoir with 7.5 meters. Through an interior staircase you can access the panoramic terrace over the city of Lisbon. These sites were classified as a National Monument since 1910.

The Patriarcal Reservoir is located in the basement of Jardim do Príncipe Real, even under the octagonal lake which was supplied by the reservoir. It is worthwhile to climb the Barbadinhos Causeway to discover the jewel of industrial archeology, and see the four steam engines (Windsor) that were operating in this place from 1880 to 1928, responsible for raising the waters of the Alviela River to the upper zone of Lisbon. In this building there is today the permanent exhibition of the Water Museum which approaches the theme of water in an interdisciplinary way, crossing history, science, technology and sustainability.
