Gypsum lay-in ceiling panels are tiles that are used in kitchens or food processing areas, storage areas, warehouses, utility rooms or any other interior or soffit ceilings that are economical and attractive rather than acoustical in performance. They are supported by suspended ceiling grids.

These gypsum panels are durable and provide cleanliness to the food processing areas. They are usually vinyl laminated to seal out dirt, moisture and odors. The vinyl surfaces are embossed and are exceptionally stain resistant. They can also withstand repeated washings. Lighting efficiency is maximized because they have exceedingly reflective surfaces.

With the laminated vinyl finish, there is no more need for additional finishing. However if a customer so desires, it is recommended to use two coats of alkyd or semi-shiny latex enamel. Also, an oil primer can be used then coated with oil paint or flat latex. Flat oil paint, two coats, can also be used.

The vinyl gypsum ceiling panels are also approved by the Department of Agriculture of the United States of America. The panels are cut easily and can fit in standard suspended ceiling grids. They are easily washable. Lightly rubbing the surface with damp cloth or sponge using soap or detergent will remove dirt and marks. Strong organic solvent cleaners and steel wool are not recommended to use in cleaning the boards.

Detergents, 5% Nitric Acid, 10% Ammonia, Ethanol, Oleic Acid, Bleach, 10% Hydrochloric Acid, Carbon Tetrachloride, Hydrogen Peroxide, and Port Wine will have no effect on the gypsum panel even if these chemicals come into contact with the panels for 24 hours. They can be easily washed with soap and water. 10% Citric Acid, Ketchup, 10% Sodium Hydroxide, Lemon juice, Coffee, Mayonnaise, Tea, Cooking oil, Milk, Trisodium Phosphate, Crayon, Mustard, and Vinegar will also have no effect on the gypsum board even when exposed to these chemicals for 24 hours. Pencil marks will leave a very light stain though. Acetone exposure for 24 hours then washed with soap and water will give the panels a shiny finish.

Gypsum lay-in ceiling panels should not be used in areas that are directly exposed to water. They should also not be used in swimming pools, shower dressing rooms and in areas with high humidity or moisture. Backload should be limited to 0.5 pounds per square foot. Enclosed or unheated spaces above the ceiling panels should be properly ventilated. Retainers or hold down clips must be provided in installations where sudden wind or air pressure change may uplift the panels. Use only an approved suspended system for exterior use when being installed outdoors.

The gypsum boards come in 1/2" and 5/8" thick type X fire rated. A type X fire rating means that the board has a minimum fire rating of 1 hour, which is the requirement of most building codes. It is more fire resistant and more expensive than the standard boards. Fire rated boards are usually required in living room areas and in such areas that are at risk of fires.
