What is a literary work? What are the characteristics of a good literary work? Answering that question is not easy. When people try to answer from one point of view, there are always problems that arise when seen from a different point of view. Moreover, literary works continue to develop. Every time we are always surprised by literary phenomena that are increasingly unique, diverse, and often unexpected.

Literary theory tries to explain, classify, generalize about what is called a literary work. Literary theory also provides criteria for experts who want to assess literature: whether a literary work is quality, original or not. With a function like this, the position of literary theory becomes important for literary criticism whose task is to assess literary works and for literary history whose task is to record the journey of writers and their literary works. Literary theory also helps readers to offer a framework for them to understand the world of literary works.

There are several experts who try to offer literary theory, either in the form of books or papers. Unfortunately, many of the literary theories known in Indonesia come from the West. Examples of literary works to support literary theory are also from western literary works. This book tries to summarize developing theories with context and examples of Indonesian literary works. In this way, the theory presented will be easily understood by both literature experts, students majoring in literature, and Indonesian literature teachers.

This book consists of nine chapters. The first chapter attempts to explain the writer's self in relation to his sociological background, psychological background, and linguistic and literary background. Chapter two contains a description of the creative process that writers go through which can be divided into: reasons and encouragement to become authors, activities before writing, activities during writing, and activities after writing.

Chapter three contains an explanation of the relationship between writers and literary works and the universe. Chapter four discusses the problems of determining literary works, the characteristics of literary works, good literary works, and the relationship between writers and literary works.

Chapter five explains readers of literary works and the relationship between writers and readers. Chapter six contains a description of the characteristics of poetry from various points of discussion along with its problems. Chapter seven contains an explanation of the characteristics of fictional prose from various discussion angles and its problems. Chapter eight discusses literature and education. This book closes with chapter nine which contains a description of literary studies that have developed so far.

Hopefully the material content of this application can be useful for self-introspection and better improvement in everyday life.
