The Poodle is called the Pudel in German, and the Caniche in French is a breed of water dog. The species is divided into four varieties based on size, the Standard Poodle, Medium Poodle, Miniature Poodle, and Toy Poodle, although the Medium Poodle variety is not universally recognized.

The Poodle is most commonly claimed to have been developed in Germany, although it is also claimed to be from France. Wildfowl hunters initially used the Standard Poodle to retrieve game from water. The smaller breed varieties were bred from the original in France, where they were once commonly used as circus performers, but have become popular companion dogs.

Most cynologists believe the Poodle originated in Germany, and the dog they refer to is roughly equivalent to the modern Standard Poodle variety. The Poodle is an active, athletic breed with the different breed varieties varying predominantly by their size. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale's breed standard states the Standard Poodle stands between 45 and 62 centimetres.

Poodles are known as highly intelligent, energetic, and friendly breeds. They require both physical and intellectual activities. A typical Poodle should be reserved and a little aloof with strangers upon the first introduction, but after a while, it should slowly reveal a warm and personable disposition once the dog realizes the new person is trustworthy and means no harm.

Poodles have been used as working dogs in the military since at least the 17th century, most likely because of their brilliant, trainable nature and background as a gundog, making them suitable to battlefields, as evidenced by their ability to be trained to ignore gunfire.
