The harp is a stringed musical instrument that has been known since ancient times in Asia, Africa and Europe and has sounded over time with its sweet melody.

The harp is formed by a resonant frame and a variable series of strings stretched between the lower section and the upper section.

The sound is obtained by touching the strings with the fingers

It is one of the oldest instruments, as shown by some engravings in the city of Thebes, from the eighteenth century BC. Much later it was used, in a portable version, by minstrels in the European Middle Ages. Subsequently, it increases in size and one of the sides acquires the role of sounding board.

In the fifteenth century harps appear with a greater number of strings than before (up to 25) and in the seventeenth century, there is evidence of chromatic harps of 58 strings. At the end of this same century, a hook system appeared, which allowed the achievement of semitones. A century later, at the end of the XVIII and beginning of the XIX, above all, the bases of the modern harp were created, with a system of double movement and another system of forks, which allowed it to considerably increase its performance.

The current harp is a complex instrument, with a triangular structure that has three well differentiated parts:

- Soundboard (reinforces the sound generated by the strings)

- Console (acts as tailpiece)

- Column (closes the triangle, giving rigidity to the set)

The harp is played with both hands, pressing the strings with the fingers, achieving different qualities of sound, depending on which section of the string the performer does.

The National Auditorium of Madrid, the Reina Sofía Center and the Fine Arts Cultural Circle, as well as the Contemporary Music Festival are several of the scenarios where this marvelous plucked string instrument, without a neck, sounds, in which the strings enter directly into the resonance box through holes made in it. This distinguishes the harp from other string instruments such as the lutes in which the strings rest on a bridge transmitting the vibration to the lid of the box.
