Prayer in language (Etymology) means Prayer. Whereas in terms/Shari'ah (Terminology), prayer is certain/special words and actions that are opened/started with takbir (takbiratul ihram) ended/closed with greetings. Carrying out the prayer is obligatory 'aini for everyone who is already mulaf (burdened with shari'ah obligations), baligh (adult/with the characteristic of having dreamed), and 'aqil (reasonable).

Allah says:

"And they are not ordered except that they only worship/worship Allah alone, sincere obedience to Him in (carrying out) religion with hanif (straight), so that they establish prayer and pay zakat, that is the straight religion". (Surah Al-Bayyinah: 5).
