About Six Degrees Of Separation

it's a small world

SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION

is the idea that all humans are six or fewer steps away from each other.

The theory was set out in 1929 by Frigyes Karinthy and postulates that by ever increasing connectivity the social distance between people shrinks.

How to use:

This app allows you to explore your social distance to other participants of this experiment.

Simply connect to other members by using the NFC-feature of your phone.

Start the app, hold both devices back to back on each other and press send on one of the phones.

It is completely anonymous, no personal data is stored or transmitted, the unique ID which is assigned to you at first start, is random.

At startup you will see a frequently updated diagram showing your unique ID as a red dot and your social distance to all other participants.

Direct connections are represented by lines. You can zoom in and move within the diagram to explore distances between you and other people.

Once you connect to someone your dots will slowly move to each other, the diagram changes and visualizes the social distance to other members.

Permissions needed:

android.permission.INTERNET

android.permission.ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE

android.permission.ACCESS_WIFI_STATE

android.permission.NFC
