Ashura is the tenth day of the month of Muharram in the Hijri calendar and is called by the Muslims on the day of Ashura and coincides with the day of the killing of Hussein bin Ali grandson of the Prophet Muhammad in the battle of Karbala, so Shiites consider it a day of condolences and grief. There were also many other historical events on the same day. Muslims differed about fasting that day. Ashura is a public holiday in countries such as Iran, Pakistan, Lebanon, Bahrain, India, Iraq and Algeria. The reason for fasting in the Sunnah is that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) saw the Jews fasting him, as Allaah saved Moses and the believers from Pharaoh. He said: "We are more deserving of Moses than them." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) offered the city and saw the Jews fast on the day of 'Ashura." He said: "What is this?" They said: "This is a valid day." This is the day that God saved the Children of Israel from their enemy. "He said: I am more deserving of Moses than you. He fasted and ordered his fast." In Muslim's narration: "This is a great day when the Prophet, may God bless him and his people, Pharaoh and his people.

This day is of importance to the Shiites. On this day, the killing of Hussein bin Ali bin Abi Talib and his family was unjust. After a three day siege, he and the people of his house were deprived of water on the 10th of Muharram, 61 AH by the army of Yazid Ibn Mu'awiyah. And to the memory of the Shiites in general, and the twelve in particular, distinctive rituals carried out during the first ten days of Muharram, which strengthen their faith by thinking of the great tragic event. The rituals of the Twelve Shiites throughout the world, especially in Karbala, are to visit the shrine of Al-Hussein, to light candles, to read the story of Imam Hussein and to cry when they hear and slap their grief at the incident. This is intended to link them with the suffering of Hussein and martyrdom, and the sacrifices he made to keep Islam alive. The martyrdom of Hussein was widely interpreted as a symbol of the struggle against injustice, tyranny and oppression.
