Tawassul is holding a wasilah (intermediary) between a servant and his Lord when the servant prays. In the religious traditions of Muslims in the archipelago, the tawassul tradition is a ritual that is deeply rooted and has even become its own specialty and an inseparable part of the process of worship (prayer).

However, in practice tawassul is often flavored with negative things that actually conflict with Islamic aqeedah, which in this case can plunge a person into the biggest sin in Islam, polytheism. Because in some practices, tawassul activities actually give the rights and characteristics of uluhiyah (divinity), which should belong solely to Allah, to the intermediary. On this basis, some people then argue that all types of tawassul that were not exemplified by the Prophet are idolatry. Meanwhile, others are of the opinion that all types of tawassul are permissible activities because this is not related to aqidah, but rather the issue of furu' (branches) in the procedures for praying to Allahu ta'ala, as stated by Shaykh Hasan Al Banna - may Allah forgive him.
