The name as Nossa Senhora Da Divina Providência, started to be popular from the 12th century in Italy. its title is related to the intercession of Our Lady during the Wedding at Cana, as can be read in John 2,1-11. At that moment, the Virgin felt the need of the bride and groom, who at that wedding party ran out of wine, and asked Jesus to help them. Jesus, in his moment of listening to his holy mother's request, transformed the water into wine, thus avoiding the embarrassment of the bride and groom. That is why the Virgin Mary is also known by the title of Mother of Divine Providence.

It is worth mentioning that the popularization of this beautiful devotion is directly related to the Order of the Barnabite Fathers, which was founded by Santo Antônio Maria Zaccaria around the year 1530.
