The 2013 curriculum is designed as a vehicle to lead students towards mastering competency in attitudes, knowledge and skills. This approach is in line with the view in Buddhism that learning is not only to know or remember (pariyatti) but also to carry out (patipatti) and achieve penetration (pativedha). "Even if someone reads a lot of the Holy Scriptures, but does not act according to the Teachings, a careless person is like a shepherd who counts other people's cows, he will not obtain the benefits of a holy life." (Dhp. 19). To ensure balance and integrity of these three domains, religious studies need to be given special emphasis regarding character. The essence of character is a person's attitude or behavior in relation to oneself, family, society and nation, as well as the natural environment.

So, character education is an effort to instill moral values ​​into the attitudes and behavior of the nation's generation so that they have politeness in interacting. The moral values ​​that we want to build include honesty, discipline, cleanliness, compassion, intellectual curiosity and creativity. Here, the religious knowledge that students learn becomes a source of values ​​and drives their behavior.

Just as an example, among the ethical values ​​in Buddhism, the main path to eliminating suffering and bringing happiness to life is known: first, the Sila: Samma Vacca (right speech), Samma Kammanta (right action), Samma Ajiva (right livelihood); second, Samadhi: Samma Vayama (right effort), Samma Sati (right mindfulness), Samma Samadhi (right concentration); and Panna: Samma Ditthi (right understanding) and Samma Sankhapa (right thought).

The key word is, character is action, not just knowledge that students must remember, so the learning process should lead them from knowledge about goodness, then create a commitment to goodness, and finally actually do goodness.

In the words of the Buddha, "Knowledge alone will not free a person from suffering, but he must also put it into practice" (Sn. 789). This Class XII Buddhism and Character Education book was written in that spirit. Learning is divided into religious activities that students must carry out in an effort to understand their religious knowledge. It does not stop with understanding, but this understanding must be actualized in real actions and daily attitudes in accordance with religious guidance, both in the form of ritual worship and social worship.

For this reason, as a religious book that refers to a competency-based curriculum, the learning plan is expressed in the form of activities. The sequence of learning is expressed in the religious activities that students must carry out. Thus, the material in this book is not to be read, heard, or memorized by students or teachers, but rather to guide what students and their teachers and friends must do in understanding and implementing the teachings of their religion.
