Fig (Ficus carica) is a tree or shrub plant species and the fruit of this species, native to the eastern Mediterranean and southwestern Asia (from Turkey to Afghanistan).

Fig is the only commercially crucial fruit-bearing plant among about 800 species of the fig genus (Ficus), which is included in the mulberry family (Moraceae). Trees are divided into males and females, and there are no male or female organs on the same tree. The fruit of the female trees is large and abundant, while the male trees have small and few fruits; the fruit is not as edible as the females but is necessary for pollination. Generally, only one male tree is planted near many female trees for pollination. Pollination in the flowers of the fig plant takes place with thuja insects. This event is called "Caprification." According to 2005 FAO data, 1,057,000-ton figs were produced globally, and Turkey is the largest fig producer in the world with 280,000 tons. This is followed by Egypt and other Mediterranean countries with 170.000-tons. It is our main export product. It is at the forefront of agriculture in the Aegean region. It is grown mainly in the Aydın region in Turkey.
