Collaboration of 40 Literacy Activists

The results of the 2018 PISA survey placed Indonesia in 74th place out of 79 countries or sixth from the bottom. In the Science category, Indonesia received a score of 396, far below the OECD average score of 489. Meanwhile in Mathematics, Indonesia was ranked 7th from the bottom with a score of 379 (OECD average 489). Meanwhile, the lowest score obtained by Indonesia was in the Reading category, namely 371 (OECD average 489). (kumparan.com, 05/12/2019).

It must be admitted that the results of the PISA research objectively are not encouraging for Indonesia. This country must struggle hard to catch up with other countries in mastering science, mathematics and reading.

Why is Indonesia's position still worse than other countries in science, mathematics and reading? One of the fundamental problems is the low level of literacy culture. Indonesia has been independent for 74 years, but its citizens' interest in reading is still low, aka still worrying, even though reading is an important capital for a country's progress.

Verbal activities such as chatting are seen as much more exciting than reading. When chatting or discussing, people are so enthusiastic that they even lose track of time, but when they have to read, people tend to be lazy, feel bored, and their eyes get sleepy quickly. Why did this happen? Because reading has not become a need, habit or lifestyle for people.

Apart from chatting, Indonesian people spend more time watching TV. The Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) once submitted data that the time children spend watching TV is longer than their study time. The number of hours children watch has increased from 35 to 46 hours a week, even if calculated up to 1,600 hours a year. This is compared to the hours he studied at school which was only 800 hours. (Republic, 26/9/2014).

Developed countries such as Japan, South Korea, or European countries have made reading a routine activity that is enjoyable for everyone. In terminals, stations, airports, and even public transportation, you can easily find people who are engrossed in reading books rather than playing with gadgets. What about in Indonesia? We can find contradictory things with habits in developed countries. In various public places, even at the dinner table, almost everyone is busy with their devices.
